Inclusive Sun Care

Sunscreen is an important part of protecting the skin from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays. Despite its importance for all, there has been a growing need to address the issue of inclusivity as it relates to sunscreen products. It is essential for sunscreen formulators to ensure that sunscreen is accessible and effective for people of all skin types and tones.

Historically, sunscreen formulations have predominantly catered to individuals with lighter skin tones who tend to burn more easily. However, people with deeper skin tones may face more unique challenges in finding suitable sun protection. It is vital to understand that individuals with darker skin are not immune to the damaging effects of UV radiation, and they can still experience sunburn, hyperpigmentation, and an increased risk of skin cancer. Therefore, inclusive sunscreen is a necessity that benefits all.

One of the primary concerns for people with darker skin tones is the well-known "white cast" issue. Many traditional sunscreens contain ingredients like conventional titanium dioxide or zinc oxide, that can leave a visible white residue which is particularly noticeable on deeper skin tones. This white cast not only affects the appearance of the skin, it also discourages individuals with deeper skin tones from using sunscreen regularly. Recognizing this problem, some sunscreen brands have responded by formulating varying product formats specifically designed for people of color, offering a range of tinted options that blend seamlessly with different skin tones or even sunscreens that utilize nanoparticle technology with mineral UV filters.

These developments address both cosmetic concerns and encourage individuals with deeper skin tones to embrace sun protection as part of their daily routine. Inclusivity in sunscreen also extends to the choice of SPF (sun protection factor) values. Higher SPF values have often been associated with lighter skin tones, leaving people with darker skin to wonder if they need the same level of protection. While melanin provides some natural protection against UV radiation, it is not sufficient to prevent sun damage completely. By offering a variety of sun care options and educating consumers about the importance of adequate protection, sunscreen manufacturers can cater to the diverse needs of individuals.

Sun Care Solutions

Many innovative sun care products today bring high performance, along with additional sensorial benefits. Vantage offers a variety of sun care solutions that are inclusive for all skin types and skin tones:

JEECHEM® TDS

JEECHEM® TDS is an ester of salicylic acid and is used primarily as a skin softening ingredient. It is an emollient ingredient that offers a medium weight skin feel with properties to clarify formulations. This product is designed for use as a sunscreen booster and can be combined with either Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide, or both, regardless of particle size, to deliver a formulation that can be inclusive to all skin tones and skin types.

Sunjin Zinc Oxide

The Sunjin sun care product line offers both Nano and Non-Nano Zinc Oxide versions. The SUNZnO-NAS series is Nano size Zinc Oxide. SUNZnO- 200SA is the world first Non-Nano rod shaped Zinc Oxide with the benefits of nano-like transparency and UV performance. The natural Stearic Acid surface treatment contributes improving the performance of Zinc Oxide rods in formulation. Zinc Oxide provides broad spectrum sun protection in formulations. SUNZnO-SA is Non-Nano Zinc Oxide with an average particle size of 150 nanometers. Dispersions of Zinc Oxide are also available for ease of use.

Sunjin Non-Nano TiO2 & Dispersions

The T-80 series of Non-Nano TiO2 is produced by aggregation of Nano TiO2 bound by an inorganic silica binder to form micro size granules. Typical particle size distribution is within the range of 364 to 988 nanometers, with an average size of 562 nanometers. The T-80 series is available in several surface treated versions for ease of use and versatility, including EcoCert versions. The T-80 series provides comparable UVB protection to 15 nanometer TiO2 and better UVA protection than 40 nanometer Zinc Oxide. The T-80 series is recommended for use in all inorganic sunscreen formulations. T-80 Non-Nano TiO2 is available in predispersed versions for ease of use and handling. The TiO2 content is 48%. EcoCert versions include caprylic capric triglyceride or dicaprylyl carbonate dispersions.

Sunjin Nano TiO2 & Dispersions

TX-85 is Nano TiO2 with an average particle size of 30 nanometers. TX-85 is recommended for use in formulations requiring high SPF values. TX-85 can be used to create low viscosity formulations and offers good redispersibility for sprayable products. TX-85AQ is the water compatible version of TX-85. Nano TiO2 dispersions are a great option for ease of use and handling with a TiO2 content of 34%.

Sunjin Specialty Suncare Ingredients

Sunsil Tin50 is an SPF-boosting TiO2 encapsulated silica bead to provide ultimate transparency and an ultra-light texture in all sunscreen containing formulations. Sunsil Tin50 is Non-Nano and EcoCert certified. Sunsil Tin50AS is surface treated for ease of use. Hybrid AB is avobenzone in a PMMA bead to provide UV protection and improved sensory feel. Hybrid AB is a water dispersible UVA filter with improved photostability. Novel formulations such as a mousse foundation with UVA protection can be created using Hybrid AB.

LIPOSHIELD™ HEV Melanin

LIPOSHIELD™ HEV Melanin is the first cosmetic ingredient designed to protect the skin from damaging high energy visible (HEV) light. It is a fractionated melanin compound and can be used as an additional environmental defense alongside UV protectors against High Energy Visible light (HEV). It is designed to shield the skin from high energy blue/violet visible light. This novel, patent-pending ingredient may help to prevent premature aging and hyperpigmentation.
